At Salsa Latina Academy, we understand the need to increase social perspective and we are making an effort to shed light on the social and political situation here in Guatemala. We are working to provide the help that is needed throughout the city of Quetzaltenango and other towns nearby. With this goal, the school works closely with different social organizations (NGOs) such as Caras Alegres, Bebe Saludable, Corazon para los NiƱos, as well as with other local organizations, where our students can volunteer their time.

A part of your tuition fees for classes goes directly to support these projects and $10 of your registration fee is used to support the social organization which, at the time, is in need of donations to use for expenses, special activities, and materials.

If you are interested in working in these or other projects, the staff at Salsa Latina Academy will work together with you to find the social projects to match your desires and abilities.

For more information about these projects, or if you would like to volunteer in a different type of project contact us.

If your time in Quetzaltenango is limited, or you would like to focus your time on language study and travel, we appreciate your desire to help in any way you can. There are other ways to help in our community. This is one reason we organize visits and excursions to the social projects in and near Quetzaltenango. In addition, participation in different activities also benefits the different social projects. We continue to maintain contact with the organizations and projects to keep you informed of changing activities as the weeks progress.

We would be happy to let you know how you can help appropriately and responsibly with your participation, time, money, and other forms of help.

The projects we work with are always looking for people to lent a hand.

Working as a volunteer requires certain conditions such as:

  • The energy and desire to help.
  • Comprehension of the cultural structure and cultural expressions (see below).
  • Adequate knowledge of the Spanish Language (see below).
  • A minimum of 2 weeks commitment is prefered, however we do have some projects available for those who are unable to commit to this time period.

If you require lessons to improve your Spanish, we are also able to offer combined salsa and Spanish courses. To assist you in this learning process the school has developed a specific teaching program for each social project. We not only teach you the necessary grammar and vocabulary specific to the area, but we also help you understand different cultural topics, history, socio-economic situations as well as other important information.

With our "individual program" we accommodate your lessons to match the type of project in which you would like to volunteer. In order to combine your volunteer time with your Salsa & Spanish classes we are willing to be flexible with your hours of study if it is necessary. In addition, if you have ideas to design activities in order to collect funds or materials for the projects, we can help you with this too.

In order to prepare for and coordinate your volunteer experience, and for the best benefit the social project in which you wish to help, it would be a great help to know ahead of time in which project you are interested. This way we can organize and prepare everything before you arrive. Please let us know as much as you can about your travel plans ahead of time.
